2009 was the Year of Astronomy, in celebration of the achievement of Galileo who used a telescope to examine the night sky - perhaps we should look upwards to remind us of the wonders out there (rather than the doom here!).  The story is that a Dutch spectacle maker discovered that two lenses in front of each other enlarged distant objects, the authorities rejected his patent and kept the invention a military secret - but even without the internet (!) the news leaked across Europe and Galileo created his own telescope and studied the night skies in1609.
