This is one of the most stimulating, and controversial, images of the World. It was first introduced by historian and cartographer Dr. Arno Peters in 1974 and has since become a world best seller. As the only totally correct representation of the earth is a globe, cartographers have to distort the sphere in order to print it on flat paper. This map preserves equal area and retains a rectangular grid of latitude and longitude. Thus all countries are the correct size in relation to one another making it easier to understand the relationships between them.
