Cassini

The Cassini Historical Maps of London provide a unique and fascinating overview of 150 years of London’s rich history from 1805 to 1946.They reveal how the capital engulfed surrounding villages to become, for much of this period, the largest city in the world. Each map explores a crucial period in London’s recent history: the late Georgian (1805-22), the late Victorian railway era (1897-8), the dawn of the motoring age (1919-20) and the period of reconstruction following the Second World War (1945-6). Cartographical and historical notes provide background information to help bring London’s past to life. - Each of the four maps covers an identical area, extending from Bushey to Theydon Bois and from Esher to Halstead – roughly the area within today’s M25. -

Britain’s 19th-century landscape re-projected and enlarged to match the present-day Ordnance Survey Landrangers® - - These maps are based on Britain's first national mapping project, Ordnance Survey's One-Inch (‘Old Series’) maps which were first published between 1805 and 1874. They have all been carefully scanned, digitally re-projected and enlarged to match the present-day Ordnance Survey Landranger® series. Each Cassini Old Series map is directly comparable with the corresponding Ordnance Survey Landranger® and uses the same sheet number and grid references, so enabling the past and the present to be compared with ease and accuracy. All the Old Series maps of England & Wales (123 in all) have now been published. - - Cassini's Old Series maps have the same name, reference number and coverage as the appropriate Ordnance Survey Landranger®. -
