A-Z was founded in 1936 by Phyllis Pearsall MBE in Gray's Inn Road, Central London, when she had difficulties getting to a party using an Ordnance Survey map! She produced her first map of London and the suburbs with the help of a single draughtsman. After an initial lack of marketing success, she was able to deliver 250 copies of this first edition London A-Z in person to WHSmith - in a wheelbarrow! These copies sold out quickly and her company took off. In 1962 the company moved its HQ to Borough Green, but kept the old offices in Gray's Inn Road as a showroom. Renamed "The Geographers' A-Z Map Company", the business started by Phyllis Pearsall now produces a variety of products (over 350 publications, using proprietary, easily followed mapping) and has become not only one of the biggest names in the cartographic industry, but a household name as well.
